Stanley is a fishing village located in the north-west coast of Tasmania with a rich history and breathtaking views.
There are many options to reach Stanley. It will take approximately 1 hour and 30 minutes from Devonport, 2 hours and 44 minutes from Launceston and 4 hours and 40 minutes from Hobart. As a person who loves road trips, I rejoice in a nice, long drive from Hobart to Stanley stopping along the way in historic towns like Ross, Campbell Town and Deloraine.

Another scenic drive you go on while travelling to Stanley is the Tarkine Drive which starts from Arthur River in the Northern part of the west coast which is a great day trip in the region. This drive allows you to forget about our everyday lives we are so used to and reminds us how enchanting Tasmanian nature is!
Things to do in Stanley
The Nut is the foremost attraction you can visit in Stanley. It is a rock formation which is created as a result of a volcanic eruptions many years ago. This visually stunning formation is surrounded by the ocean and rises about 152 meters above sea level. To ascend the Nut, there are two options.
You can hike your way up or you can take the chairlift and simply enjoy the spectacular views in a peaceful way. When you reach the top, you can complete the walking circuit in around 45 minutes at a relaxed pace. There are many viewpoints at the top including views of stunning Bass Strait, Stanley township and historic sites.

Highfield Historic Site, built in 1835, is where the first ever houses were built in this part of Tasmania. This historic site is a perfect example of architecture from the Regency period. You can do a self-guided tour at the site by purchasing entry tickets.
Spotting wildlife like seals and fairy penguins is another activity you can do while in Stanley. There are viewing spots designated at Godfrey’s Beach as fairy penguins return every evening just after sunset. Visitors are advised not to disturb the penguins by flashing bright lights.
In terms of local restaurants and cuisine, I personally enjoyed the lobster and crayfish at Hersey Seafood in Stanley.
