Tasmania is a world-renowned mountain biking destination, due for the most part to the creation of the Blue Derby mountain bike trails in the state’s northeast. Since its inception, Blue Derby has hosted two Enduro World Series rounds and been voted as one of the favourite rounds by the cyclists themselves. Those without the skill of a world-class mountain biker shouldn’t be intimidated though, with enough beginner tracks to keep the whole family amused for at least a day or two.
Sticking with the north of the state and mountain bikes for the moment, you can also explore two additional trails just outside of Launceston. The Trevallyn trails are based within a few kilometres of the city of Launceston, above the Cataract Gorge, whilst the Kate Reed trail is a relatively short set of trails nearer to Launceston airport. Hollybank Adventures is also a great spot for a few hours on the bike in the north of the state.
To the south, you’ll find the Maydena Bike Park, located around an hour and a half to the north west of Hobart. There are more than 50 trails at the park to keep you going for days and days – or head up to the summit and drink in the views of the Southwest Wilderness. Closer to Hobart, check out the kunanyi/Mt Wellington for some great tracks, or take a guided tour with one of the local operators – perfect for those who want to experience the thrill without carrying your bike around on holiday.
Speaking of taking your bike on holiday, road biking in Tasmania can be an enjoyable way to experience the state and there are several itinerary options suitable for experienced cyclists. You don’t actually need to bring your bike down though if you’re not keen, bike hiring agents are located in Hobart and Launceston as well as in popular biking areas, such as those already mentioned.
