Home to Tasmania’s second biggest town, Launceston, as well as Flinder’s Island, famous for its crayfish and cheese, and of course you can’t miss the Tamar Valley wine route, there is so much to do in northern Tasmania.
Whether you choose to use Launceston as your base, one of the small coastal towns to the north east, spend a week mountain biking in Derby, or find a quaint, historical village, you’ll find this region both accessible and diverse.
Families will want to check out Seahorse World, Butterfly House and the Tamar Valley Wetlands while in this region, but don’t forget to explore Hollybank Adventures for some zip lining adrenalin for the whole family! You can also drop Low Head Penguin Tours into your itinerary, a one hour tour each evening that departs from Low Head, but can also provide return transfers to Launceston if needed.
The area is also a food mecca, with so much local produce from a highly respected agricultural industry. In Launceston, you’ll find a myriad of new and exciting cafes and restaurants, while a drive outside of the city centre will see you pulling into unique honey centres, well known wineries, dairies, berry farms and, or course, chocolate truffle shops to explore. Better yet, if the season is right, why not get on board a hot air balloon and experience the region from the air?
Launceston is the largest town in this region, and has a local airport with daily flights to Melbourne. Launceston is a great base from which to explore the surrounding regions, although there are several other coastal towns and wine region accommodation options to choose from. Launceston is also where you will find Cataract Gorge Reserve, a natural gorge that offers local walking tours, a swimming pool and the world’s longest single span chair lift.
