Tasmania is one of those rare places where your ideal experience can be as unique as your preferences. Some of us love the challenge of hiking to earn that well-deserved drink at the end of the day, while others prefer the comfort of a private electric vehicle, being driven around in luxury and style. Then there are those who thrive on a good road trip, and others still who enjoy the ease and camaraderie of a coach tour with fellow travellers.
Since moving to Hobart in 2021 and stepping into my role as Manager at the Tasmanian Travel and Information Centre, I've found myself drawn more and more to the wild beauty of the West. While the East Coast may be the more popular destination, I’ve come to appreciate the rugged, untamed charm of the West – a place where nature feels a little wilder, a little more untouched. Every day in my job brings new opportunities to share the stunning landscapes of Tassie with visitors from all over the world, and I couldn’t be more proud to do so.
I try to always leave town on my birthday and do something ‘cool’. A couple of weeks ago, I did a fabulous 2½ day walk in the North of Tassie in the Walls of Jerusalem National Park. Having done the Three Capes Track and Overland Track in 2020 and Frenchman’s Cap in 2022, it had been a while since an overnighter in Tassie. The “Walls” was high on my priority list and I was determined to do it this year. A colleague of mine had been the weekend prior and did the hike in to the Wild Dog Campground and the next day to Dixon’s Kingdom and back out, which is fairly common to do, but we decided we would do the circuit going out to Lake Adelaide. They had clear skies and 19C sunshine.
Nestled in the heart of Tasmania’s wilderness, the South Coast Track is a breathtaking journey that promises adventure, camaraderie, and unforgettable memories. As a group of six friends, we set off on this iconic trail in February 2024, starting our trek at Melaleuca, ready to embrace the challenges and beauty that lay ahead. We got dropped there by a small plane operated by Par Avion, big enough to fit just us and the 18kg-20kg packs we each packed.
I recently had the opportunity to board Derwent Ferries - a passenger ferry which departs from Brooke Street Pier and takes you on a quick 15-minute trip over to Bellerive Pier, which arrives near the Waterfront Hotel - a great food and drink venue with stunning water views.
